Man hijacked bus, forced it to stop at Tim Hortons

A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged after allegedly hijacking a TTC bus at

knifepoint, directing the driver to a Vaughan Tim Hortons and then calling 911 on himself because he believed he’d overdosed on drugs.

Toronto police received a report from the TTC at 12:22 a.m. Friday about a man who had boarded a Finch West bus minutes earlier at Albion Rd. and Finch Ave. W. The man pulled out a knife, causing passengers on the bus to flee, and ordered the driver to drive, Toronto police said.

During the hijacking, the suspect allegedly forced the bus driver to go off his normal route and run red lights, eventually leaving Toronto and entering York Region.

York police were called about the same incident at 12:30 a.m.

The suspect eventually directed the driver to pull over at a Tim Hortons at Steeles Ave. W. and Sante Dr., just east of Hwy. 400 in Vaughan. The suspect then entered the Tim Hortons and called 911, “advising them he believed he had overdosed on drugs.”

York police arrived on scene, got customers out of the Tim Hortons and arrested the man without incident.

The bus driver is “shaken,” but was not physically harmed, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said, adding that counseling and other assistance is made available to all employees who experience traumatic incidents on the job.

Toronto man Daniel Ferreira, 31, has been arrested and charged with assault with a weapon, mischief endangering life, forcible confinement, uttering threats and taking a motor vehicle without content.

He was scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court Friday.
